Sony, AMD Tease PlayStation 6: Next-Gen AI, Ray Tracing, Project Amethyst

A recent online chat just gave us a big peek into the future of gaming. Mark Cerny, the smart mind behind the PlayStation 5, sat down with Jack Huynh, AMD’s Senior Vice President. Their conversation dropped some serious hints about what’s next for our home gaming systems.

It turns out that Sony Interactive Entertainment and AMD are working together on some groundbreaking new tech. They’re using a powerful tool called Machine Learning to make games look and play even better. In fact, they have three exciting innovations in the works right now.

Neural Arrays

These are like tiny AI brains working together. Each processing unit can team up and share information, just like an artificial intelligence engine. This setup helps the system handle bigger, smarter tasks without using up too many resources.
*

Radiance Cores

Next are the “Radiance Cores.” These are brand-new pieces of hardware. They are built to make light in games look incredibly real, showing off advanced effects like ray tracing and path tracing instantly.
*

Universal Compression

Lastly, there’s “Universal Compression.” This is a clever way to shrink game data. It means the system’s memory doesn’t have to work as hard, which frees up the graphics chip to do more. The end result? Games that run smoother with much higher frame rates.

While these technologies are still in the experimental stage, Sony plans to use them in their “next-gen console” in just a few years. That’s a pretty clear signal that a brand-new PlayStation is definitely on the horizon. This video also quietly confirms something that was just a rumor about a year ago: AMD will continue to make the core chips for PlayStation consoles.
