Singer Sonu Nigam has taken legal action against a criminal case filed against him in Karnataka. He approached the Karnataka High Court to have the case dismissed.
Background of the Controversy
The case against Sonu Nigam stems from a comment he allegedly made during a concert in Bengaluru. At the event, some audience members asked him to sing in Kannada. Sonu Nigam reportedly declined and criticized the request, accusing some attendees of being rude. He allegedly linked the incident to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. This sparked outrage, with many criticizing his remarks on social media. A complaint was filed against him, leading to the registration of a criminal case.
Sonu Nigam’s Response and Legal Action
Sonu Nigam has denied making any derogatory remarks and has apologized for any unintended offense caused. He later took to social media to clarify his stance and express respect for the Kannada community. Despite his apology, the legal proceedings continued. Now, he has petitioned the Karnataka High Court to quash the criminal case against him. His legal team argued that the case was filed with malicious intent and that he had not made any inflammatory statements.
The case was initially listed before Justice Shivashankar Amarannavar’s vacation bench. The hearing has been adjourned to a later date.
Complaint Filed Against Sonu Nigam
The complaint against Sonu Nigam was filed by T.A. Dharamaraj, president of the Bengaluru city district unit of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Narayan Gowda faction). Based on this complaint, the Avalahalli police registered a case under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, on May 3.
The outcome of Sonu Nigam’s petition is awaited, with the legal proceedings ongoing.
