Mozambican football club União Desportiva do Songo has clinched its fourth national title amidst a season plagued by significant financial and logistical disruptions across the league.
Songo secured the championship with a dominant 5-1 victory over Textáfrica in a postponed fixture from the 21st round of the Moçambola 2025 season. This win mathematically placed them 19 points clear of their closest rivals, Black Bulls, who recently drew 2-2 against Ferroviário de Lichinga.
The 2025 Moçambola season has been marked by repeated calendar adjustments and suspensions, underscoring the deep-seated operational challenges facing the country’s top-tier football competition. The championship’s start, initially set for late March, was delayed by nearly two months, eventually kicking off in mid-May.
A major two-week suspension occurred in July when the state-owned airline LAM refused to provide air transport for teams. The airline cited approximately $1.4 million (€1.3 million) in unpaid debts from clubs dating back to 2024.
The 5-1 triumph over Textáfrica saw Songo’s Luis Miquissone score the opening goal in the 12th minute. He added another just before halftime, following an assist from Vitinho.
In the second half, Acides extended Songo’s lead with goals in the 72nd and 80th minutes. Miquissone completed his hat-trick in the final moments.
Textáfrica, a team battling relegation, managed a consolation goal in injury time through Eládio.
The victory triggered widespread celebrations in Songo town, located in Tete province near the Cahora Bassa dam, one of Africa’s largest. Fans commemorated the club’s fourth national title, following previous wins in 2017, 2018, and 2022.
Coached by Mozambican Daúde Razaque, Songo’s consistent performance contrasted with the league’s instability. Several teams currently have postponed games due to the season’s interruptions and cancellations, primarily stemming from persistent transport issues.
