The lights were dimmed, the popcorn ready, but Sonakshi Sinha’s thriller, ‘Nikita Roy,’ missed its cue. Just a day before its grand debut, the movie vanished from the June 27 release schedule. It’s now slated to hit theaters on July 18. This last-minute change has the industry buzzing. Why the sudden shift? Was it a strategic retreat or something else entirely?
Industry whispers suggest a crowded field might be the culprit. Two big names, Kajol’s ‘Maa’ and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Kannappa,’ were set to open around the same time. For many, the postponement looked like a move to avoid a direct box office showdown. But some experts offer a much blunter take on the situation.
The Harsh Reality: A “Non-Event” Film?
Vishek Chauhan, a theater owner and an industry exhibitor, didn’t mince words. He called the decision “wise,” but added a dose of cold reality. “Look, when several big movies open at once, a smaller film simply gets lost in the shuffle,” Chauhan explained. “Giving it some breathing room is smart. But the honest truth is, films like ‘Nikita Roy’ have no connection with the audience.”
Chauhan was frank about the film’s lack of promotion. “There was no buzz, no advertising. I’m a theater owner, and I’m hearing about this film from you for the first time,” he stated. “If the news didn’t even reach me, how would it reach the average moviegoer?” This highlights a common issue where smaller films struggle to find their footing without adequate marketing.
When Theaters Are Just a “Check-in”
Chauhan further revealed a less glamorous reason some films seek a theatrical release. “Often, the goal for these types of movies is just to secure an OTT deal,” he shared. Online streaming platforms often prefer films that have had a cinematic run, no matter how brief. “They simply ask if the film played in theaters. If yes, they buy it,” Chauhan noted.
He described these releases as merely “checking attendance.” Filmmakers schedule very limited shows, just enough to tick the box for OTT services. This explains the lack of promotion and general indifference from the industry. For theater owners, he stressed, ‘Nikita Roy’ is simply a “non-event.” It doesn’t matter if it plays now or later. Sonakshi Sinha’s recent films haven’t exactly set the box office on fire, and this one, he feels, won’t change that trend.
No Tears for Small Film Cancellations
What happens when a film postpones its release at the last minute? Chauhan pointed out a double standard. “If a big movie cancels, theater owners lose money. They might even go to court,” he said, referencing a case like ‘Bhool Chook Maaf’.
But for smaller films, the stakes are different. “Nobody cares,” Chauhan stated bluntly. “If we had allotted a show, it would have been just one or two. Neither the audience nor the exhibitors would miss it.” This underscores the precarious position of mid-budget films in a market dominated by blockbusters.
A Strategic Retreat
Trade expert Komal Nahta echoed similar sentiments, agreeing that the postponement was the correct move. “When two major films like ‘Kannappa’ and ‘Maa’ are already set, there’s just no screen space left,” Nahta observed. “It becomes incredibly tough for any small or mid-sized film to get screens.”
He believes the makers of ‘Nikita Roy’ made a smart call by not getting caught in that crowded window. “If these kinds of films are released at the right time, they at least get a chance to make a mark,” Nahta concluded. “Otherwise, they disappear completely in the noise of bigger productions.”
Makers Confirm the Shift
The film’s producers took to their official Instagram page to announce the new date. Their post read, “Friends! We find ourselves caught between the release of many films and the battle for screens.” They explained their decision was made “after consulting our colleagues, distributors, and exhibitors.”
The team pushed the release to July 18, hoping to reach “a wider audience.” They thanked fans for their support and promised the extra wait would be “worth it.” ‘Nikita Roy’ is directed by Kush S. Sinha, written by Pawan Kirpalani, and also stars Paresh Rawal and Suhail Nayyar alongside Sonakshi Sinha.
