Some Windows printers change their name to HP LaserJet for no apparent reason

Windows 10 and Windows 11 users are facing a new issue that is causing unexpected confusion with their printers: They will be randomly renamed HP LaserJet Printers.

Microsoft has recognized this issue and stated that it is investigating this situation, which affects the configuration of printers on devices that have access to the Microsoft Store.

“We are seeing some issues related to printer configuration on Windows devices that have access to the Microsoft Store.”Microsoft explained this in a support note. “Microsoft is investigating this issue and working with partners to find a solution.”

This issue affects Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices running the 22H2 update This will automatically install the HP Smart app and change printer names even if they are not HP brands.

“Printers are renamed HP printers regardless of their manufacturer”mentions Microsoft. “Most are referred to as the HP LaserJet M101-M106 model. Printer icons may also change.

If an IT administrator has blocked use of the Microsoft Store, the printers will not be renamed and the HP Smart app will not be installed. Microsoft claims so The problem is not caused by an HP update, which suggests that it is itself a Windows issue.

Windows 10/11 users can still print, but when they try to double-click a printer, they may receive the error message “There are no tasks available for this page.”
