Qualcomm is apparently expected to introduce the new Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip at the same time as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus.
Now the first information about the 7th generation processor is beginning to emerge and the news that arrives disappoints. The chip recorded results below expectations on the AnTuTu platform.
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 with only 170k points in AnTuTu benchmarking
When officially presenting the new top-of-the-range chip Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus, Qualcomm should also reveal the equally new Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. And now the first information about this processor is beginning to emerge, which, for now, falls short of expectations.
On the AnTuTu benchmarking platform, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 recorded a score of just 170,000 points. For comparison, let us recall that the Snapdragon 778G also from Qualcomm managed to score 160 thousand points on the Realme Q3S smartphone. So it was expected that the new chip would, more significantly, outperform the old one.
And the bad news for Qualcomm doesn’t end there. On the same benchmarking platform, MediaTek’s rival Dimensity 8000 scored just over 191,000 points when integrated into the OPPO K10 smartphone. Which means that MediaTek has managed to overtake Qualcomm once again and is proving to be a strong opponent.
This is, however, preliminary information as the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor was tested on a prototype. It is expected that in commercial smartphones, the chip can record a better result.
Qualcomm delays Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus announcement
Qualcomm will have been forced to postpone the announcement and reveal of its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chip and, consequently, also of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. All due to the outbreak of Covid-19 that affected the Chinese city of Zhengzhou and that led the country’s authorities to decree mandatory confinement.
The information is being advanced by the leaker Digital Chat Station on the Chinese social network Weibo. For this reason, the processor manufacturer will have postponed the presentation of the chips for the second half of this year.
This delay could lead several smartphone brands to also postpone the launch of their new terminals equipped with these processors for the second half of 2022. Of course, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra and the Motorola Frontier, both with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chip which were expected to be revealed at the end of this month of May.
