Smoke from the fires in Greece is visible from the ISS

The smoke from the fierce fires ravaging part of Greece is so thick and spread over such an area that it is visible from space. Images shot from the International Space Station (ISS) and posted on Twitter this Sunday show the extent of the phenomenon. The spacecraft, however, evolves more than 400 km from the surface of the Earth, specifies TF1 News.

On the video, several sources of fire are clearly identifiable by the long plumes of smoke which escape from them. The fires took in forest areas and triggered massive interventions by firefighters as well as unprecedented evacuation operations in the country. Some of the affected areas, such as the islands of Rhodes and Corfu, are indeed very popular with tourists, especially during the summer holidays.

A nation “at war”

30,000 holidaymakers had to be evacuated because of the flames. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece, said Monday in an address to Parliament that his country was “at war against (…) the fires”. The extremely high temperatures which favor the multiplication of fires should drop on Wednesday, announced the national meteorological agency (EMY).
