Smith and Cummins best candidates for the captaincy of Australia Test: Nathan Lyon

The Ashes series between Australia and England will begin in Gabba from December 8. On this, Australian spinner Nathan Lyon believes that Steve Smith and fast pitcher Pat Cummins are the most suitable candidates for the captaincy after the resignation of Tim Paine. On this subject, Cricket Australia (CA) had discussions with Cummins and Smith, who could be selected for the next Australian test captain.

Nathan Lyon said: “I think you look at the two players that CA has interacted with. In my opinion, both are the best candidates.”

According to Lyon, “I think he has done a good job honestly. It is going to be a very difficult decision. If Cummins is named captain, the veteran players will support him and help him on the field.”

Lyon further said that despite being the most experienced player on the team, he is not interested in the leadership role. He said Cummins wants to play at least two more years with the upcoming series of touring India and England.

Lyon said: “That’s why I’m supporting Pat Cummins and Steve Smith. He said that Smith has a lot of experience in cricket and that everyone knows his potential.”

Let us tell you that in March of this year, Smith spoke openly about his desire to be captain of Australia again for the first time. Previously, in March 2018, Smith was removed from the captaincy due to his involvement in a dispute against South Africa.
