Smart, Gobert and Antetokounmpo lead the best defensive team in the NBA

The NBA announced the members of the best defensive team of the season, which includes Marcus Smart (Boston Celtics and Defensive Player of the Year), Rudy Gobert (Utah Jazz) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks).

Completing that quintet are Mikal Bridges (Phoenix Suns) and Jaren Jackson Jr. (Memphis Grizzlies).

The league also revealed the players who are part of the second best defensive team this season.

There are Bam Adebayo (Miami Heat), Jrue Holiday (Milwaukee Bucks), Matisse Thybulle (Philadelphia 76ers), Robert Williams (Boston Celtics) and Draymond Green (Golden State Warriors).

One hundred sports journalists participate in voting for the NBA awards.

Smart led the voting with an eye-catching 99 of 100 votes to be on the best defensive team of the season.

The second most supported was Bridges (95 votes for the first team, 3 for the second team) while Gobert received the third most support (76 votes for the first team, 19 for the second).

In mid-April, the NBA announced that Smart was the Defensive Player of the Year, making the Celtics player the first "guard" (point guard/shooting guard) who had won this award since the 1995-1996 season, when Gary Payton won it.

Smart took 257 points in that vote, beating the other two finalists: Bridges (202 points) and Gobert (136 points).

The Celtics player thus took over from Gobert, who won this award last season and also in the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 courses.

The recognition for Smart was also a distinction for the Celtics, who in the regular season had the best defensive rating in the NBA and as a result finished in second place in the Eastern Conference (51-31).
