slowdown to the market

Barça fans, and also their coach Xavi Hernández, can already get used to the idea that this winter market the team is not going to strengthen. At least, that is what is extracted from the words of Jordi Cruyff, technical secretary of the blaugrana entity.

Jordi Cruyff gave a round of interviews to Catalunya Ràdio, Mundo Deportivo and Sport in which the message was as unique as it was forceful: Barça’s financial situation and the LaLiga regulations make it almost impossible for them to strengthen themselves in winter.

“Dreams are free, footballers are not” he told the two Catalan newspapers when both asked him for reinforcements. An argument that makes the situation of the culé club very clear.

Jordi Cruyff reasoned that “strengthening and adapting to Fair-Play goes hand in hand, the president has already said that the issue of Fair-Play is very difficult. I think the president was already clear that we were in a complicated, almost impossible situation, therefore talking about reinforcements doesn’t make sense now. Now, it is also true that there is a month left for the market and whether something can be done or not will be seen over time”.

The club’s technical secretary warned, however, that “It is not a matter of pessimism or optimism, it is being realistic. If you can’t, you can’t and we will continue with the template we have. And 17 World Cup players means there is a competitive squad. Of course, in football we always want to improve and we have ideas to do this and that, but if we can’t, let’s fight and in the League we are on a good line and I hope we can continue it in the second part of the season”.

In addition to assuming the difficulty to reinforce the team, Jordi Cruyff did not save criticism of LaLiga and Javier Tebas for what it considers to be the toughest legislation in Europe in this regard.

“Every week or month something new comes along. It is true that the rule is getting tougher, it is also true that Spanish football is noticing it. I no longer speak of Barça. You have to see what is best for Spanish football. Competition with other countries is very tough. Both what is allowed in expenses and in taxes, ”he stated.

Not even, explains Jordi Cruyff, if the sale of players occurred, as could be the case of Memphis Depay or Franck Kessié, it would serve to make room regarding new signings: “It is not simply that one player leaves and another enters, I wish it were like that but it is not. The equations are made Not because of Memphis but because of anyone, that if a Barça player leaves to bring in another, you can consider it. But if that’s not going to give you Fair-Play either, then why? Has no sense”.

And if the option of bringing in a right-back seems complicated, Messi’s option is not even contemplated. That is when Jordi Cruyff, when asked by the three media outlets, uttered the most lapidary phrase of his three interviews: “dreams are free, footballers are not.”
