Slovenia: ruling party quits Twitter to limit fake news and ‘hate speech’ after Elon Musk buyout

Slovenia’s ruling party, the Movement for Freedom (GS), announced on Saturday (November 26th) to stop using Twitter, fearing that the social network could be used by politicians to spread fake news and hate speech.

The GS, the party of liberal Prime Minister Robert Golob, won parliamentary elections in April with a platform that promised to restore decency in politics and strengthen the rule of law undermined by former Conservative Prime Minister Janez Jansa. “Given the behavior and announcements of the new owner and management of Twitter, we can expect them to open their doors further to indecent communication and hate speech”GS said in a statement referring to the platform’s recent takeover by billionaire Elon Musk.

Janez Jansa, an avid Twitter user with over 100 000 subscribers, in a country of two million inhabitants, used the platform to confront critics and the media. Robert Golob argued that he would not use the platform “to avoid the temptation of fast fingers”those who react too quickly on the network.
