Jeff Bezos’ latest venture, Slate Auto, is shaking up the electric vehicle (EV) market with a bold new strategy. This Michigan-based startup, founded in 2022, has been operating under the radar until recently. TechCrunch revealed that Bezos has invested in Slate, which plans to launch an EV starting at around $25,000. The base model, called “Blank Slate,” will allow buyers to customize their vehicles.
A Transformer-Like EV
Slate’s innovative approach is centered around a modular design that enables significant transformations. The company’s slogan, “We Built It. You Make It,” reflects this philosophy. David Tracy from The Autopian spotted a prototype SUV in Venice, California, which was disguised as a mock business vehicle. Reddit users have also shared images of a truck version, modified to resemble a hatchback, similar to the upcoming Rivian R3.
The prototype Tracy saw was a two-door pickup truck with a solid roof, giving it an SUV-like appearance. It was wrapped with a mock business sticker, “Rockabye Rides,” and featured a URL leading to a countdown website for Slate’s upcoming launch. This is not the only version; three different Slate EV designs have been spotted so far.
Investor Appeal
The company’s ability to modify its EVs has been a key factor in attracting investors. Slate raised over $100 million in its Series B funding round, with the management team emphasizing the “transformer” concept during investor presentations. While the exterior designs have been revealed, the interior and specifications remain a mystery.
Slate’s innovative approach and Bezos’ backing have generated significant interest in the EV market. As the company prepares to unveil its products, the industry is eagerly awaiting more information about its modular design and customization options.
