SL vs WI: Spinners made West Indies comeback, Sri Lanka cut to 386 runs in first innings

The West Indies, led by Roston Chase (5 of 83), rallied on the second day of the two-game series opener to pack Sri Lanka’s first innings for 386 runs. The West Indies scored 12 undefeated runs in their opening innings until tea break. Left arm spinner Jomel Warrican took three wickets for 87 runs for the West Indies.

Sri Lanka started the day with 267 races over three terrains. At the time, captain Dimuth Karunaratne was at 132 and Dhananjay D’Silva at 56. However, de Silva, who added just five runs to his score yesterday, was hit by a wicket by Shannon Gabriel in the seventh final of the day. He shared a 111-run partnership with Karunaratne for the fourth wicket.

Shortly after this, Chase finished his 147-race innings leaving Karunaratne stumped. Karunaratne hit 15 fours on his 300-ball innings. Veteran wicket-keeper hitter Dinesh Chandimal played a 45-run inning on 83 balls, teaming up with the tail batsmen to push the score past 360 runs.

Lasith Imbuldeniya (17) and Praneev Jayawickrama (8 no out) had 25 runs for the last quarter while Sri Lanka registered 386 in the first innings. Young rookie Jeremy Solozano was ruled out of the game due to a ‘concussion’ on the first day of the game on Sunday after a helmet hit the ball while fielding on the short leg. Shai Hope has been inducted into the West Indies team instead.

The West Indies Cricket Board tweeted: “Jeremy Solozano has a concussion problem. He will return to the team hotel today (from the hospital) and will follow proper protocol. Shai Hope will replace Solozano in the current test match.

The board said earlier Sunday, “Jeremy Solozano’s scan does not show any serious external injuries.” You will be kept under the supervision of the hospital doctors overnight. We will keep you informed of any other updates (more information) from our medical team.
