Six charged with human trafficking in Artigas; A lawyer and a psychologist are involved

Six people were charged with human trafficking and conspiracy to commit a crime in the gemstone quarry case in the Catalán region, 60 kilometers from the city Artigas.

The defendants are four men and two women who are being investigated for human trafficking for labor exploitation in Artigas. A seventh person was released.

One of the women is a lawyer, the other a psychologist, the latter from Venezuela. The rest are Uruguayans.

The maneuver consisted of promising Venezuelan citizens a job with a certain income amounting to thousands of dollars, and when they arrived in Uruguay to work in the quarries in Artigas, the conditions were not like that.

The initial investigation by prosecutors and witness statements revealed that in some cases they demanded $150 and were never alone, and their travel documents were withheld. The victims were around 28 people of Venezuelan origin.

They are currently being cared for by the Ministry of Social Development and the Victims Unit of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The defendants must comply with the precautionary measures of house arrest from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. using an electronic device for 120 days. In addition, they must provide an address, not leave the country and hand in travel documents. In addition, there is a ban on approaching within 500 meters or communicating with the victims.
