World No. 2 Jannik Sinner defeated 19-year-old Joao Fonseca 7-6(6), 7-6(4) to advance to the Indian Wells Masters 1000 quarter-finals on Tuesday night. During the match, Sinner avoided physical injury after a high-velocity shot from the Brazilian player nearly struck him directly in the face.
The close call prompted a rare display of frustration from the typically composed Italian champion. Sinner also showed visible irritation toward a spectator actively cheering against him during pivotal rallies. Fonseca enjoyed heavy crowd support from Brazilian fans throughout the night session.
This marked the first career meeting between Sinner and Fonseca. Fonseca reached the Round of 16 after saving match points against Karen Khachanov and securing a straight-sets victory over Tommy Paul.
Sinner trailed 6-3 in the first-set tie-break before saving three consecutive set points and winning five straight points to claim the set 8-6. In the second set, Sinner built a 5-2 lead but failed to serve out the match at 5-4. Fonseca broke at love to force a second tie-break, which Sinner won 7-4.
“Joao is an incredible player, incredible talent,” Sinner said on court following the victory. “Very powerful from both sides. He was serving very well. Maybe he dropped a bit at the end of the second set, but I’m very happy to get through.”
The victory extends Sinner’s streak of reaching the quarter-finals in 11 of his last 12 ATP Masters 1000 appearances. He continues to establish himself as a leading figure in professional sports.
Sinner will play 20-year-old American Learner Tien in the quarter-finals.
