The Estádio da Luz buzzed with energy, but it was Santa Clara who walked away with a precious point. This 1-1 draw against Benfica felt like a victory for the visiting team. Defender Sidney Lima was a picture of happiness after the final whistle.
The game, part of the fifth league matchday, had been a real struggle. Santa Clara found themselves down a man early. Paulo Victor received a red card in the 38th minute. This meant facing a tough opponent with a serious disadvantage. Yet, they did not give up.
Lima spoke to BTV after the match, full of pride for his teammates. He praised their “attitude” and their incredible “spirit of sacrifice.” “The whole team showed sacrifice,” he explained. “This included the starting eleven and every player who came onto the field.” He stressed how difficult the match was, a fact everyone understood.
“Playing with one less player meant we had to give so much more,” Lima continued. “We still created the most dangerous chances. We definitely had our opportunities.” He felt their team’s attitude was excellent, even against a top opponent. “We knew how to dig deep and suffer. We deserve congratulations for this effort. We need to keep going on this path.”
Then, Lima shifted his thoughts to an unexpected hero, or rather, a moment for an idol. Nicolás Otamendi, a player Lima openly admires, made a critical individual error in stoppage time. This mistake directly led to Santa Clara’s crucial goal. “We all know Otamendi is a great player,” Lima stated. “I’m a big fan of his work.” He added, “Such mistakes can happen to anyone. He’s arguably one of the best center-backs in Europe, not just here.” Lima also pointed out that Otamendi had been playing a superb game overall. “That’s just how it happened tonight. But we are certainly happy with the outcome.”
