Shreyas Iyer Suffers Second Consecutive Final Loss in 9 Days

Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium witnessed a thrilling T20 final between Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals and Sobo Mumbai Falcons. Maratha Royals took home the championship title, defeating Falcons by six wickets.

Falcons’ captain, Shreyas Iyer, suffered his second consecutive final loss in just nine days. Previously, Iyer’s captaincy of Punjab Kings ended in defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2025 final on June 3.

The match began with Falcons winning the toss and opting to bat first. Openers Ishaan Mulchandani and Angkrish Raghuvanshi started strong but lost their wickets early. Mulchandani scored 20 runs in 17 balls, while Raghuvanshi managed only 7 runs in 12 balls. The duo combined for 31 runs in 4.3 overs for the first wicket.

Falcons’ batting lineup then collapsed, with the team score reading 72/7 in 11.5 overs. However, Mayuresh Tandel and Harsh Aghav stabilized the innings with an unbeaten 85-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Tandel hit 50 runs in 32 balls, including 3 fours and 3 sixes, while Aghav scored 45 runs with 1 four and 4 sixes. This partnership helped Falcons reach a respectable 157 runs in 20 overs.

For Maratha Royals, Vaibhav Mali took two wickets, while Maxwell Swaminathan and Aditya Dhumal claimed one wicket each. Captain Shreyas Iyer had a disappointing game, scoring only 12 runs in 17 balls without hitting a single boundary.

Maratha Royals started aggressively in pursuit of the 158-run target. The openers scored 42/2 in 4.2 overs. The middle order then struggled, but Chinmay Sutar and Sachin Yadav combined for 41 runs for the third wicket. After Yadav’s dismissal for 19 runs, Avais Khan Noor and Sutar added 67 runs for the fourth wicket, bringing the team close to victory.

Noor’s contribution was 38 runs, while Sutar scored 53 runs in 49 balls, including 2 fours and 2 sixes. The duo set up the win, which was eventually sealed by Rohan Rajee and Vaibhav Mali in 19.2 overs.

This loss adds to Shreyas Iyer’s woes, having faced two significant final defeats in under a week. His batting silence and strategic errors have raised questions about his ability to handle pressure in big matches.
