Sholay’s 50th Anniversary: 4K Re-release Restores Original Censored Climax

Ramesh Sippy’s iconic film “Sholay” is set for another major theatrical return. The Bollywood classic will be re-released in a 4K version, titled “Sholay – The Final Cut,” to mark its 50th anniversary.

This special edition is scheduled to hit cinemas across India on December 12, 2025. It will be showcased on 1,500 screens nationwide.

A significant highlight of this re-release is the inclusion of the film’s original ending. This version was previously altered due to censorship during the 1975 Emergency.

The original climax depicted Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar) killing Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) with spiked shoes in an act of revenge. The Censor Board deemed this scene too violent and demanded its removal at the time.

“Sholay” has a history of re-releases, consistently drawing audiences back to its epic narrative. It was restored in 70mm for its 30th anniversary in 2004.

A 3D version of the film premiered in 2014. Another 4K version was also released in 2024.

Since its initial release in 1975, “Sholay” has profoundly influenced Indian culture. It holds the distinction of being one of the most-watched Indian films ever.

The movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, and Amjad Khan, was recently celebrated at the Toronto International Film Festival. Its enduring appeal has cemented its status as a cult classic.
