Shohei Ohtani signs a one-year, $30 million deal with Anaheim for 2023

The Angels today agreed to a one-year, $30 million contract with the RHP/DHshōhei ohtanifor the 2023 season. With the agreement, the arbitration process is avoided.

The 28-year-old Ohtani has made 27 pitching starts this season and has currently compiled a 15-8 record with a 2.35 ERA (161 IP – 42 ER) and 213 strikeouts while holding opponents to a . 207 (123/595). In 152 games as a hitter, he has 88 runs scored, 29 doubles, six triples, 34 home runs, 94 RBIs, 71 walks, 11 stolen bases and an .888 OPS.

In his five seasons with the Angels, Ohtani has totaled 62 pitching starts, going 28-13 with a 2.98 ERA (344.2 IP – 114 ER) and 435 strikeouts. In 561 games as a hitter, he has 324 runs scored, 102 doubles, 21 triples, 127 home runs, 341 RBIs, 66 stolen bases and an .890 OPS.

A two-time All-Star, Ohtani was the 2018 AL Rookie of the Year and a unanimous selection as the 2021 AL MVP. The native of Oshu, Japan, originally signed with the Angels on Sept. December 2017 after five seasons with the Nippon-Ham Fighters in the Japan Pacific League.
