Shohei Ohtani hits 100 major league home runs

Shohei Ohtani hit 100 major league home runs and the Los Angeles Angels split honors in a Saturday doubleheader, beating the Oakland Athletics 9-1 in the night game.

Taylor Ward hit a key grand slam for the Angels.

In the afternoon game, Luis Barrera hit his first major league homer, no less than a game-ending, three-run shot, as the A’s prevailed 4-3.

It didn’t take long for the Angels to recover. Ward hit his second grand slam of the season as part of a five-run second-inning drive off Adam Oller (0-3).

Ohtani got into action in the fifth episode. Following an RBI double by Mike Trout, the Japanese star hit his seventh homer of the season, making it 8-1.

Thus, Ohtani became the third Japanese with at least a hundred home runs in the Major Leagues. He trails only Hideki Matsui at 175 and Ichiro Suzuki at 117.

Similarly, he joined Babe Ruth as the only players to have had at least 100 homers and at least 250 strikeouts.

That support was more than enough for Michael Lorenzen (4-2), who gave up one run on five hits in seven innings.

With their win in the first game of the doubleheader, the A’s snapped a seven-game home losing streak.

They lost 3-1 in the ninth inning, with two outs, before coming back against Cuban closer Raisel Iglesias (1-1).

Dominican Ramón Laureano doubled and Panamanian Christian Bethancourt managed a walk before Barrera unloaded his blow to the seats in right field.

It was the Dominican’s 17th turn in his career. Barrera had made an error in left field that allowed the Angels to score their third touchdown.

Phillies 8, Dodges 3

Bryce Harper homered at Dodger Stadium for the third straight game and finished with three hits, and the Philadelphia Phillies had four homers in an 8-3 victory over the limping Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.

Jean Segura, Kyle Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins homered off Dodgers starter Julio Urías (2-3).

The victory went to Ranger Suárez (4-1), with a season-high seven innings. The Venezuelan added his third victory in his last four starts.

Urías gave up a career-high four home runs. Five of the eight runs allowed by the Mexican lefty were earned, with eight hits and three strikeouts.

Mookie Betts hit a solo homer for Los Angeles, who have lost four in a row for the first time since the June roast.

Segura extended his hitting streak to 11 games in the first inning with a three-run homer that narrowly went over the left-field fence. Schwarber and Hoskins added solo home runs to extend the lead to 8-1.

The Dodgers responded in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double by Cody Bellinger with the bases loaded.

For the Phillies, Dominican Jean Segura 4-1 with a run scored and three RBIs. Panamanian Johan Camargo 4-0.

For the Dodgers, the Dominican Hanser Alberto 3-0.
