Shilpa Shetty grilled by EOW for hours in Rs 60 crore fraud; Raj Kundra connection probed

Mumbai’s Economic Offenses Wing just spent four and a half hours questioning Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty. This intense session focused on an alleged Rs 60 crore fraud case. The Mumbai Police’s EOW unit is diving deep into this high-stakes financial puzzle.

The core of the matter centers around a loan-cum-investment deal. A 60-year-old businessman, Deepak Kothari, claims he lost a whopping Rs 60 crore. He pointed fingers at the Kundra-Shetty couple. Kothari first lodged his complaint back in August at Juhu Police Station. That’s when the EOW stepped in, taking over the investigation. They’re now sifting through piles of financial documents and bank records.

The investigation has already gathered statements from five individuals. Shilpa’s husband, Raj Kundra, is among them. The EOW is really zeroing in on a particular company. This is the entity through which the disputed transactions reportedly happened. Both Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra held director positions in this company.

This company, now in liquidation, began as a large-scale home shopping and online retail platform some years ago. It appears the business struggled. The EOW also spoke with Rajendra Bhutada, the resolution professional linked to the company. Bhutada, called as a witness, told officials he noted many financial irregularities. These issues were then shared with the investigating agency.

Raj Kundra, during his questioning, made some interesting claims. He said a portion of the funds went to several Bollywood celebrities. Names like Bipasha Basu, Neha Dhupia, and Ekta Kapoor were mentioned. He stated these payments were for professional fees. However, these claims are still unconfirmed. Authorities are now working to figure out if these payments truly related to the investment deal or if they were just an excuse.

The EOW team pressed Shilpa Shetty on several key points. They asked about her specific role within the company. Her involvement in investment decisions also came up. Crucially, they questioned her about her signatures on financial documents. Sources suggest the actress described herself as a “silent partner.” She maintained that all of the company’s day-to-day operational decisions were handled by her husband, Raj Kundra.

The EOW has made it clear that this investigation is just getting started. More witnesses are slated for questioning. There’s a strong possibility that new names will surface. This is because many transactions documented within the company files appear suspicious in nature. The plot thickens for this high-profile couple.
