If it’s been radio silence since the release of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011the project of a Sherlock Holmes 3 with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law still remains relevant. A scenario of Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) would even have been enthroned on the desks for a long time from hollywood. Whoever gave life to the character in the guise of RDJ, Guy Ritchieexplained this in 2015 :
“Everyone wants to do it, but we’re all very busy. It is necessary that this evening the best of the three, we are not going to do it just for the pleasure of doing it. It has to be better than the previous two, otherwise what’s the point? »
Since then, the filmmaker has left to carry out other projects (Aladdin, The Gentlemen, An Angry Man…) and will be behind the camera for Operation Fortune: Cunning of War (2022) and The Interpreter (2023). An XXL timetable which means that Guy Ritchie handed over to Dexter Fletcher (Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman) to take over from the rest. The formalization was made in September 2020. But, once again, the project floundered in semolina for the same reason: the unavailability of its protagonists. Robert Downey Jr. is currently filming the very promising Oppenheimer with Christopher Nolan and its five-star cast and Jude Law been quite busy with Fantastic Beasts. On the side of the antagonist, gardenwho remains the core producer of the universe, tried to cast Johnny Depp but there was no news on this level as the film remains at a standstill.
However, the very serious media of the HollywoodReporter reveals that two series derived from sherlock holmes will be produced for HBO Max and Robert Downey Jr. will be the executive producer. Nothing says at the moment if the 57-year-old comedian will return to his role just like Jude Law in Watson. Nothing has been filtered either on the smallest detail of the plot. But there again, no information has reached us since the beginning of April.
With Collider, Dexter Fletcher seems to still believe in it as he revealed to the media in question:
“The pandemic has thrown the project off the rails, but I think eventually the film will go into production well. It must. I don’t know when it will be possible unfortunately, but I believe that this film must exist. I think it’s mostly a question of succeeding in bringing together the right people at the right time, in the right place, that’s all there is to it. […] But I believe there is a demand for this film, and I’m sure a lot of other people are aware of that reality. »
Only concern, more than ten years after the release of the second film, we remain in a status quo: Everyone wants to make the movie, but no one is available to do it. However, Sherlock Holmes 3 could quickly return to the starting blocks on the side from hollywood. Indeed, after the violent critical and financial failure of Dolittle ($245 million in revenue for a $175 million budget excluding marketing), Robert Downey Jr. could rush the universe sherlock holmes to boost his career. The actor, with Fast Company, had even put forward the hypothesis of an extended universe around leading investigators from the romantic world. So many promises, but still a lot of uncertainties around this famous character from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
