Shazam: Wrath of the Gods crashes violently at the box office

DC Films already in danger?

Shazam: Wrath of the Gods had literally everything to succeed: The first film of 2019 had been able to create a fairly solid fan base with good reviews as a result (90% good reviews on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes), Zachary Levi and the filmmaker David F.Sandberg remained in the ship and the budget was even revised upwards (125 million budget for this Wrath of the Gods against 90 million for the first film). Add to that the fairly successful promotional campaign and the addition of big names to the cast (Lucy Liu, Helen Mirren). But the mayonnaise didn’t seem to set properly.

For its first weekend of operation in the United States, Shazam 2 reported 30 million dollars in revenue. Early reviews are also deeply mixed with 51% good reviews. The film does almost twice as well as the 67 million Black Adams who had finished his race 168 million dollars in revenue in the United States. Currently set at 45 Million, Shazam 2 will probably end its run well below the bar of 100 million in the United States and should be saved by its international exploitation.

Overall, the film David F.Sandberg checked in $101 million. If he is close to reimbursing his basic production costs, he must count 100 million extra for marketing. One thing is therefore certain: the very bad start for Shazam 2 is a big snub for james gunn who genuinely expected a different outcome given the family aura of the Blockbuster.
