Shark Kills Australian Tourist in New South Wales, Injures Companion

A young female tourist died and her male companion was severely injured in a shark attack off a remote Australian beach on Thursday, November 27, 2025, marking the fifth such incident recorded in the country this year, with at least two proving fatal.

The woman, approximately 20 years old, succumbed to her injuries. Her male companion, of a similar age, sustained severe wounds to his thigh.

He was airlifted to a hospital for urgent medical attention following the attack at Crowdy Bay Beach. The location is within the Crowdy Bay National Park in New South Wales.

Authorities immediately closed Crowdy Bay Beach and several adjacent coastal areas. Police deployed drones to survey the waters as part of their investigation.

Experts have been dispatched to the site to determine the species of shark involved in the fatal incident.

Police have cautioned the public and tourists to avoid the closed beaches. They also urged adherence to instructions from coastal safety officials.

This incident follows another fatal shark attack less than three months prior. In that event, a male tourist was killed by a shark bite on a beach north of Sydney.

That previous attack near Sydney was deemed an unusual occurrence for the specific coastal region. The increasing frequency of such events is raising concerns among local authorities and residents.

The initial report of the incident was published by the BBC news website.
