Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal has finally put to rest the buzz about him and OnlyFans star Sophie Rain. It seems everyone on the internet was wondering if the two were more than just friends.
Rumors started flying last month. Rain, who is 21, shared a photo of herself with O’Neal, 53, on X. They were out and about, and Shaq was all smiles next to Rain. She even gave the camera a playful middle finger. "Look who I ran into on my birthday!" she wrote at the time.
One online creator pointed out the age gap, calling it "a bit awkward." Shaq wasn’t one to stay quiet. He jumped onto Instagram on September 29 with his own classic response. "I don’t date people that young," he declared. Then, he added a twist: "but I would date your mom and give you a brother." That certainly got people talking!
Sophie Rain also spoke up, agreeing with Shaq’s take. In a chat with Us Weekly, she made it clear they are simply "just friends." She even shared how Shaq reacted after their photo went viral. "He reached out after and said, ‘Holy crap! We’re famous! Haha, I don’t know why people think we’re dating,’" Rain recalled. She found the whole situation amusing. "People are making up crazy stories, but Shaq was very respectful," she added. "It was my 21st birthday and he made it unforgettable." Rain laughed at the wild speculation. She said Shaq’s public comment showed his true colors. He never tried to be anything but supportive and fun, she stressed.
Shaq, it turns out, is no stranger to public relationships and the spotlight that comes with them. Before this recent hubbub, he was married to Shaunie Henderson. They tied the knot in 2002. After five years, they decided to go their separate ways. They tried to make it work again briefly in 2007. But by 2009, Henderson officially filed for divorce.
Together, Shaq and Shaunie have four children: Shareef, who is 25, Shaqir, 22, Amirah, 23, and Me’arah, 19. They also share parenting duties for Myles, 28, who is Shaunie’s son from an earlier relationship. Shaq also has another daughter, Taahirah, 29, with his former partner Arnetta Yardbourgh.
Shaunie Henderson opened up about her marriage to Shaq in her 2024 memoir, called ‘Undefeated: Changing the Rules and Winning on My Own Terms.’ She admitted something quite surprising: she wasn’t sure if she "ever truly loved the man." Instead, Henderson explained that she "was in love with the idea of marrying the man I had a family with." She was also "in love with the idea of building a life together."
Despite her doubts about love, Henderson said she "really enjoyed spending time with him." She appreciated how NBA trips let her "be with my husband and experience NBA life for a while." However, she explained that their relationship struggled because O’Neal was trying to do too much. He was a "thirty-something, world-famous billionaire with thousands of women throwing themselves at him." At the same time, he was trying "to be a husband and father." This balancing act, in her view, eventually doomed their marriage.
Henderson wrote about those early years, saying she "enjoyed those sweet early years being a mother and raising my children." Her days were busy with family life. Every now and then, she could travel and enjoy the high life of the NBA. But, she revealed, her marriage was "invisibly" starting to fall apart.
Shaq showed a softer side when he reacted to Henderson’s memoir. He posted on Instagram, "I get it… I wouldn’t have fallen in love with me either." He added, "I wish you the best… All my love, Shaq." He even captioned the image simply, "Believe me, I understand."
