Reflexes

  • Tim Paine has left the captaincy of Australia just before the Ashes series
  • Shane Warne wants to see Pat Cummins as captain
  • Aside from Pat Cummins, Steve Smith is also in the running for the captaincy.

Spin legend Shane Warne has endorsed the appointment of Pat Cummins as Australia’s next test captain, saying the time has come for pacemaker Tim Paine to take responsibility. Paine resigned as test captain amid a Cricket Australia investigation into sending obscene messages to a colleague in 2017.

Warne believes that current vice-captain Cummins should be named captain before the Ashes series. He told Australia’s ‘Daily Telegraph’: “I think the time is right to make Pat Cummins captain.” I thought about this even before Penn quit.

Cummins played the first test for Australia in 2011 and has so far taken 164 wickets in 32 tests. Warne said: “This poster boy is loved and respected by people around the world. Pat Cummins should be named captain. Matthew Wade, Josh Inglis or Alex Carey should be replaced on the test team instead of Paine.

He said: “Inglis is my first choice as a goalkeeper. He is a 360-degree player and has scored three centuries in world-class cricket last season. Expressing sympathy for Penn, he said that he too is a human being and should not be judged on the basis of an incident.

“What happened is sad. I feel bad for him and his family,” he said. I will not judge him on the basis of this incident. Being in public life doesn’t mean you don’t make mistakes. Players are also human beings and they also have emotions. Stop commenting, it’s not our job.
