Shakira faces a second tax investigation in Spain

Has Shakira found love again?

A Spanish court opened a new case for alleged tax irregularities to the Colombian singer Shakira, who will already be tried as of November for other crimes against the Spanish Treasury, the court reported on Thursday.

“The investigating court 2 of Esplugues de Llobregat has opened a procedure derived from the complaint filed by the Prosecutor’s Office against the singer Shakira for two alleged crimes against the Public Treasury for personal income tax and wealth tax for the year 2018,” said the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) in a statement.

The Colombian star, who lived for years in Barcelona, has another open process for which she must be tried as of November at the Barcelona Court for an alleged fiscal fraud committed between 2012 and 2014.

The Public Ministry requests for her more than eight years in jail and a fine of about €24 million (26.8 million dollars), under accusation of having defrauded 14.5 million from the Spanish treasury in those years.

The Prosecutor’s Office accuses Shakira of having used a “corporate framework” created years before so as not to pay taxes in Spain in the years 2012, 2013 and 2014, despite already residing in the country for more than the 183 days a year stipulated by law.

The 46-year-old artist, known for international hits such as “Waka Waka”, “Hips don’t lie” or “Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with the Argentine Bizarrap, has always denied the accusations, and assures that due to his profession at that time he maintained a lifestyle in continuous movement.

In an interview with Elle magazine a few months ago, the singer accused the Spanish tax authorities of resorting to “a lascivious press campaign to try to influence people and put pressure on the media.”

The star’s private life once again attracted great media attention when his separation from former FC Barcelona soccer player Gerard Piqué, with whom he has two children, was made public last year.

After reaching an agreement with her ex-partner for the custody of their children, Shakira moved her residence to Miami.
