Shabana Azmi was born in Hyderabad. Early in her career, she made a special place in the hearts of viewers. She starred in many “woman-centric” and “parallel cinema” films. Even now, she stays active in movies. This brilliant actress holds five National Awards for Best Actress. We all know about her great films. Let’s dive into some lesser-known tales about her life and career.
The Time She Almost Walked Away
Can you believe a star with over 160 films almost walked away from it all? Early in her career, Shabana faced a moment that made her want to quit. She was on set for the film ‘Parvarish.’ The dance choreographer, Kamal Master, gave her a challenging step. She had to dance while holding two guns. Shabana asked him to change the steps or give her more practice. Kamal Master got angry and stopped the shoot. He reportedly snapped, “Are you going to teach me about dance?”
This deeply upset Shabana. She left the set in tears and went home. She told her family she didn’t want to act anymore. The film’s director even tried to talk her out of it, but she refused. Later, at an event, actress Sulakshana offered wise advice. She told Shabana that the wrongdoer should leave the industry, not her. Sulakshana’s words changed Shabana’s mind. She decided to return to acting. Interestingly, Shabana also shared that Kamal Master never forgave her. He would often question directors about casting her. His anger towards her just never went away.

Breaking Down on the ‘Arth’ Set
Shabana’s dedication to her roles is legendary. Take her part as Pooja Malhotra in Mahesh Bhatt’s 1982 film ‘Arth.’ She played a married woman whose husband cheats on her. Shabana brought so much raw emotion to the role of a betrayed wife. Director Mahesh Bhatt often recounts a powerful story from the set. He told Pinkvilla that Shabana completely became her character, Pooja. She was so invested that she didn’t even take a fee for the film. Not only that, but she brought her own costumes from home. She even brought clothes for Smita Patil, who was considered her rival at the time.

A Songwriting Challenge for Two Legends
Beyond the dramatic roles, Shabana has a playful side, especially with her family. Her husband, Javed Akhtar, is a famous lyricist, just like Gulzar. Shabana once challenged both of them to write a love song using the same melody. The results were hilariously different!

At an event, Shabana shared what they came up with. Gulzar Sahab wrote a tender song: ‘Aaja re piya more aa, mora lage na jiya…’ This means, “Come, my beloved, come, my heart doesn’t settle.” Javed Akhtar Sahab, on the other hand, penned a more defiant tune: ‘Ja tose nahi bolun, ja re ja re, tu na mera sanam, tu na mera piya.’ This translates to, “Go, I won’t speak to you, go, you are not my lover, you are not my beloved.” Shabana explained that this showed the unique styles of both great writers. The audience burst into laughter after hearing her story.
Beyond the Silver Screen: Family and Philanthropy
Shabana’s roots run deep in the film world. Her father, Kaifi Azmi, was a celebrated poet. Her mother, Shaukat Azmi, was a renowned actress. The talent continues with her nieces, Tabu and Farah Naaz. TV actress Tanvi Azmi is her sister-in-law. Her brother, Baba Azmi, is a well-known cinematographer. She married famous lyricist Javed Akhtar. From his first marriage, Javed has two children: Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. Both Farhan and Zoya are successful actors and directors in Bollywood.
