Sgacedom distributes 72 million pesos for rights collected during the pandemic

During the years 2020 and 2021, the Society of Dominican Music Authors, Composers and Editors (Sgacedom) distributed 72 million pesos to national and foreign authors, as well as to the music publishers represented, reported the president of the entity.

Gioldan Nicolás Morel (Giordano) said that during that time an approximate amount of 14 million pesos was allocated for the social assistance plans of the authors, which includes economic aid to authors in a situation of vulnerability, fixed aid, payment of medical insurance and social and cultural activities, as established in the entity’s statutes.

“During the years 2020 and 2021 Sgacedom has fulfilled its role of collecting and distributing to its partners the copyright generated by the commercial exploitation of its works, despite the drastic reduction in the use of music and the impact on the financial capacity after the cancellation of public shows and the closure of bars, restaurants and nightclubs,” Morel said. He highlighted the contribution of Sgacedom to the entity’s corporate members.

He assured that the agreements reached between the entity and the most important cable companies in the country, and other economic groups, general users and in the same way the income received by the digital platforms through Latinautor were decisive.

Morel indicated that during the pandemic, more than 600 authors were included in government social programs (Stay at home).

Sgacedom collects public communication for the commercial exploitation of works, through Law 65-00 on Copyright and its application regulation 362. It is a member of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers, which brings together more than 220 societies of the world.
