Sergio García Dols misses Moto2 Thailand due to injury, threatens championship hopes

Sergio García Dols, one of the top Spanish hopes to become champion in the Motorcycle World Cup, won’t be at the starting line of Moto2 in Thailand. This is due to a fall during the preseason that required an operation. The Valencian rider, who finished 4th in 2024 in the intermediate category, suffered a fracture in the metacarpian room of his right hand and is currently recovering. It’s unclear if he’ll have a substitute within the MSI Racing Team structure.

García Dols is clearly a top contender in Moto2, having led the championship during many appointments in 2023. However, he ended up giving in to a mix of bad results and uncertainty about his future. He even considered joining Pramac Yamaha, but ultimately decided to stay in Moto2 with the team led by Teo Martín. The motorcycle he’ll be riding is the same one that won the last title with Ai Ogura, but now everything is up in the air due to his injury.

The incident occurred during the last day of training in Jerez, where García fell and suffered the aforementioned fracture. He underwent surgery at the Quirón Dexeus clinic, and the main consequence is that he’ll miss the first appointment in Thailand. This is a significant setback for both García and the MSI team, which will have to start the season against other top favorites without their star rider.

One of the top contenders, Arón Canet, has been impressive throughout the preseason, setting the pace in Jerez with a time of 1:39.552. He beat his partner Barry Baltus and Manu González, making him a strong candidate for the championship. Meanwhile, the team based in Madrid, MSI, will have some good news in the small category, thanks to the performance of their new incorporation, Ángel Piqueras. He’s given a good proof of his favoritism with an exciting preseason after shining as a debutant in 2024 within the Leopard ranks.
