Serena Williams says it’s time to leave the courts

American tennis player Serena Williams announced on Tuesday that the "countdown" to retire as a professional has begun, on Instagram and in an interview in Vogue magazine.

"There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction."said the winner of 23 Grand Slam titles, in a message on Instagram.

"It’s always a difficult time when you love something so much. My God, I really enjoy tennis. But now the countdown has begun"continued the 40-year-old player.

"I have to focus on being a mother, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different but exciting Serena. I’m going to enjoy these next few weeks"he underlined.

The tennis player won the last of her 23 titles at the Australian Open in 2017, when she was already pregnant with her daughter, Olympia.

Since then she hasn’t won another trophy to equal the record of 24 held by Australia’s Margaret Court.

His last attempt could come at the US Open in New York, which will take place at the end of August.

Williams played on hard-court tennis for the first time in a year and a half on Monday at the WTA tournament in Toronto.

The American qualified to play the second round of the Canadian event after beating the Spanish Nuria Parrizas Díaz (N.57) 6-3, 6-4.

Williams thus obtained his first individual victory for fourteen months at Roland Garros-2021, a tournament in which he reached the fourth round.

On Tuesday, he wrote in the September issue of Vogue magazine, which featured on the cover, that he was "turning away" of the sport after the US Open, a tournament in which he has won six of his crowns.

"Unfortunately, she wasn’t ready for Wimbledon this year."recounted in Vogue. "And I don’t know if I’ll be ready for New York. But I’m going to try. And the previous tournaments will be fun"he continued.

On the comparison with Court, he said: "I know some fans have a fantasy that I could have matched Margaret (Court) in London, beat her record in New York and then at the awards show say, ‘Hasta la vista!’ I get it. it’s a good fantasy"he conceded.

"But I’m not looking for a final moment on the track. I’m terrible with goodbyes, the worst in the world"he concluded.
