“Selena y Los Dinos”: Unseen Legacy of Tex-Mex Queen Arrives on Netflix

Netflix has officially announced November 17 as the release date for the new documentary, “Selena y Los Dinos.” The film offers a fresh look at the artistic life of Selena Quintanilla.

This marks Netflix’s second production centered on “The Queen of Tex-Mex.” The streaming giant previously released “Selena, The Series” between 2020 and 2021.

Directed by Isabel Castro, “Selena y Los Dinos” premiered in May at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. It won the Special Jury Prize for American Documentaries for Archival Storytelling. The documentary also received accolades at the South by Southwest and Miami festivals.

Netflix describes the film as capturing Selena Quintanilla “through never-before-seen images from the family’s personal archives.” The documentary is expected to provide intimate details of Selena’s journey.

The film traces the Quintanilla family’s path from their earliest performances to sold-out stadium concerts. It will also reportedly include information surrounding Selena’s tragic 1995 assassination by Yolanda Saldívar.

New interviews and statements come from Selena’s immediate family. Her parents, siblings, and husband, Chris Pérez, are featured. Members of Los Dinos, including Pete Astudillo, also participate.

These accounts will share curious facts about the band’s origins, musical tours, and artistic processes. They aim to show how the group achieved the enduring fame it still holds with Selena at its forefront.

Director Isabel Castro stated her intention to honor Selena’s “extraordinary rise and enduring legacy.” She aimed to offer “a window into her life behind the scenes.” Castro promised “personal archives, intimate family interviews, and new dimensions of Selena’s journey.”

Abraham Quintanilla III, Selena’s brother, serves as an executive producer on the project. The main producers are Julie Goldman, Christopher Clements, J. Daniel Torres, David Blackman, and Simran Singh.
