A Portuguese second-division football club is pursuing an aggressive strategy of player development and high-value sales to fund its ambitious goal of reaching the top league, its president said, highlighting a path fraught with financial pressure.
Nélio Lucas, president of U. Leiria’s SAD, outlined the club’s “bold” strategy in a recent interview, prioritizing promotion to the first division. He emphasized that U. Leiria possesses an “absolutely outstanding squad” for its current league standing.
Lucas, a businessman and former CEO of Doyen Sports Investments, acknowledged the personal toll of his role since taking leadership in February. He described his position as a “chair of suffering” despite his dedication as a fan.
The club recently completed significant player sales. Djé D’Avilla was sold to Chicago Fire for $4.28 million. Alisson Santos moved to Sporting for $2.25 million.
Lucas expressed confidence in making “even bigger sales” than D’Avilla’s in the future. However, he noted the constant financial “pressure” from the need to sell top assets. “We are always under pressure because we can lose our best assets at any moment,” Lucas stated.
U. Leiria attracts an average of 6,000 fans per game to its home ground, the Magalhães Pessoa stadium. Lucas admitted the stadium is “inadequately sized for the location.”
He voiced a desire for U. Leiria to host the League Cup final four at the stadium, competing against top-tier teams.
