Search for a missing military helicopter with 5 US soldiers on board

The authorities have started searching A Marine Corps helicopter transporting five soldiers from Nevada to California and that it was reported late on Wednesday morning. The aircraft, a CH-53E Super Stallion, departed Creech Air Force Base in Clark County, Nevada, and flew to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

The five U.S. Marines were part of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, part of Marine Aircraft Group 16 of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing in Miramar. The Third Marine Aircraft Squadron, based at Miramar Air Station, coordinates search and rescue operations in collaboration with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the Civil Air Patrol.

The Sheriff’s Department was notified at 1 a.m. local time that the plane was delayed in arriving in Miramar and was last seen in the Pine Valley area, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) east of downtown San Diego, according to reports Lt. Matthew Carpenter.

Weather conditions worsened overnight as a historic storm hit California. Heavy rain and gusts of wind made the situation more difficult. The National Weather Service in San Diego predicted snow accumulations in the mountains and strong winds.
