Former England international Paul Scholes has issued a stark assessment of the national team’s chances at the 2026 World Cup, stating they “have no chance” unless key creative midfielders are integrated into the squad. Scholes, a legend for Manchester United, expressed his strong conviction to the British press.
“If we look at the current team, it’s easy to understand that it has no chance of winning the World Cup,” Scholes stated. He emphasized the critical need for Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, and Jude Bellingham to be included in the starting lineup.
Scholes expressed surprise that these players have not featured more prominently. “There are no problems with Phil Foden or Jack Grealish. It’s a decision and they have to accept it, whether they like it or not,” he said.
He championed their current form, noting, “Everyone knows Phil Foden is doing amazing for Manchester City. Just as Jack Grealish knows the influence he currently has at Manchester City. And Jude Bellingham also knows he’s a special player.”
The former midfielder reiterated his belief that “these three must be in the team for the World Cup.” He acknowledged that even with their inclusion, winning the tournament would remain “tremendously difficult,” though it would increase England’s probabilities.
Scholes specifically highlighted Bellingham’s readiness. “Jude Bellingham, for example, is already physically fit and must be called up,” he added.
He also pointed to the limited opportunities for manager Gareth Southgate to integrate new talent before the global tournament. “The manager doesn’t have many more games until the start of the World Cup,” Scholes commented, citing upcoming international breaks. “It’s essential that these three players get playing time.”
