Scariolo, one step away from leaving Virtus

The information about the future of Sergio Scariolo continues. The Italian coach, Spanish coach, was in talks to mark a true milestone and sign for the Raptors of the NBA, which would have made him one of the few European coaches to lead a franchise in the best League in the world. But he stayed at the gates: the Canadians finally opted for Darko Rajakovic and Scariolo was ruled out along with other people, including the Spanish Jordi Fernández. Therefore, the leader, one of the best in the Old Continent in his position, will not return to the NBA or the Raptors, the entity for which he worked from 2018 to 2021, when he was an assistant to Nick Nurse and won a ring, the of 2019, with a Spanish flavor: Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka were also on that squad.

With this decision, Rajakovic joined Igor Kokoskov (Phoenix Suns, 2018-19) as one of the only two Europeans to lead an NBA team, apart from David Blatt, who despite his Israeli nationality was born in Boston. Although neither of them jumped directly from European basketball to the bench of a League franchise, something that would have happened with Scariolo. What’s more, both Rajakovioc and Kokoskov had a long journey within different structures of various teams in the North American country and were formed there.

For Rajakovic it all began in 2012, when he landed at the Tulsa 66ers (Development League) from Spain, specifically from Torrelodones, a town in Madrid where he led the local team for three courses. Then his jobs would come as an assistant to the Thunder, Suns and Grizzlies. The Tennessee franchise has been their springboard to the elite after three dream years, with continuous growth: from 38 victories in 2020-21 to 56 and 51 the last two seasonsall at the command of an emerging Taylor Jenkins.
