For two decades, a quiet vigil held the attention of many, as Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid bin Talal Al Saud, affectionately known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” lay in a coma. That long wait has now come to an end. The prince passed away peacefully at the age of 36, his family confirmed.
The tragic journey began in 2005. Prince Al-Waleed was just 15 years old. He was studying at a military college in England when a severe car crash in London left him gravely injured. The accident caused serious bleeding in his brain and damage to his internal organs. He never fully regained consciousness after that day.
Following the accident, the prince was moved to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. There, he remained under constant medical care, relying on a ventilator to breathe. Despite his condition, his father, Prince Khalid bin Talal Al Saud, never lost hope. He closely oversaw his son’s treatment and consistently refused calls to turn off the life support. His dedication was a testament to a parent’s unwavering love.
News of the prince’s death was shared by his father on social media platform X. Prince Khalid posted a heartfelt message, including a verse from the Quran. “With hearts that believe in the will and destiny of Allah, and with great sadness, we mourn the passing of our beloved son, Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid bin Talal Al Saud. May peace be upon him.”
Soon after the announcement, the hashtag #SleepingPrince began trending online once more. Thousands of people from around the world shared their condolences and expressed sorrow. Many wished for the prince’s gentle soul to find complete peace. His funeral was held at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.
