Satyajit Ray’s ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’ to screen at Cannes Film Festival 2025.

The Cannes Film Festival is set to screen Satyajit Ray’s 1970 film “Aranyer Din Ratri” in 4K restoration at Cannes 2025. The film, starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore, and Rabi Ghosh, is a timeless classic that follows four young men on a journey into the wilderness.

The Film’s Journey to Cannes

The Film Heritage Foundation announced on Instagram that they collaborated with Janus Films and The Criterion Collection to restore the film. The restoration is a significant achievement, ensuring the film’s legacy for future generations.

A Star-Studded Premiere

The premiere will feature a distinguished gathering, including filmmaker Wes Anderson, actress Sharmila Tagore, and Simi Garewal. Producers Purnima Dutta and Peter Becker, along with Margaret Bode and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, will also be in attendance.

Sharmila Tagore is thrilled to be part of the event. She recalls Satyajit Ray approaching her for the film while she was shooting “Aradhana.” The experience was memorable, with challenging weather conditions and a talented cast.

The film’s screening is set to take place during the 77th Cannes Film Festival, scheduled from May 13 to 24, 2025. The event promises to be an unforgettable celebration of cinema, with “Aranyer Din Ratri” being a highlight of the festival.
