The spotlight has fallen on Santi Yusta, the eaves of Casademont Zaragoza, who scored a triple that has already become a part of Spanish basketball history. This incredible play rescued the Spanish team from a delicate situation in Bratislava, forcing a second extension and ultimately leading to a 72-76 win. Losing would have been dramatic, to say the least.
When asked about that miraculous play, Yusta downplayed it, saying “it was a little strange, but I was within the time they told me, so…” He had managed to recover the ball, throw an unbalanced triple, and write his name into the history books. In that meeting, Yusta ended with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and a valuation of 19. A few days later, he made 25 points, four rebounds, and 26 valuation in the triumph over Slovakia in Ourense, sealing the team’s classification for the Eurobasket and giving them a chance to defend their 2022 crown.
Yusta, however, doesn’t want to be seen as the sole hero. “The hero is something that people say, but it was a joint job,” he emphasizes. He’s not looking to be the protagonist, especially not in the upcoming meeting against Latvia, where there’s nothing at stake. What he does believe is that the last two matches were two of the most special of his career, not just because of the pressure to win, but also because he enjoyed them on a personal level. With only 12 international appearances under his belt, Yusta hasn’t had many opportunities with the Spanish team, largely due to the presence of great players before him.
Now, Yusta dreams of expanding his international appearances by going to the Eurobasket. “I do see myself there. If I didn’t see myself, it would be the first mistake I would be making,” he says with confidence. He’s optimistic about his chances, but acknowledges that it’s not just up to him. As for his current team, Casademont Zaragoza, Yusta has significant weight and is the only Spanish player among the 50 who play the most in the Endesa League, enjoying 24:12 minutes per game. He’s comfortable, important, and able to make his game, but he hopes many Spaniards could say the same.

He loves Japanese food and wouldn’t rule out playing in Japan one day, following in the footsteps of other Spanish players. For now, though, he’s comfortable in Spain and looking to make the most of his opportunities.
