Sandy Alcántara throws complete game as Marlins blank Twins

Sandy Alcantaralast year’s NL Cy Young, was the complete games leader during the 2022 season of the Major Leagues and it didn’t take long to register the first in the new American ball campaign.

In his second start of the 2023 campaign, the 27-year-old Dominican pitched the full nine innings of the game in which the Miami Marlins (2-4) blanked the Minnesota Twins (4-1) 1-0 at LoanDepot Park. Also, this was the pitcher’s first victory in the new season.

The pitcher from Azua only needed 100 pitches to record the fourth shutout of his MLB career. Alcántara struck out five of the 30 batters he faced, allowed three hits and walked only one.

Alcántara recorded the strikeouts against Trevor Larnach, in the first entry; Joey Rooster, in the second and in the seventh; Carlos Belt, in the sixth; and christian vazquez in the eighth. The Marlins pitcher’s 100th pitch ended in a double play via 63 on Trevor Larnach’s groundout.

This game, which registered an attendance of 10,668 fans, was another sign that the pitching clock has worked well. The commitment ended 1:57 hours after the initial launch.

Unfortunately, the other two at bats of the Anaquense against the Twins ended in strikeouts: by Kenta Maeda in the fourth and by Emilio Pagán in the seventh.
