Sandro Baessa, a name familiar to many in the paralympic athletics community, added another impressive medal to his collection this past Saturday. The Portuguese athlete, known for his strong performances including being a Paris 2024 runner-up, clinched the bronze medal in the 1,500 meters T20 event. This race, designed for athletes with an intellectual impairment, was a highlight at the Paralympic Athletics World Championships currently unfolding in New Delhi, India.

This bronze medal wasn’t just another win; it marked Baessa’s fourth podium finish at a World Championship event. He powered through the race, crossing the finish line in 3 minutes, 55.00 seconds. While a formidable time, it placed him just behind two exceptional competitors. Michael Brannigan from the United States secured the gold with a blistering 3:50.44. Japan’s Natsuki Toda earned the silver, finishing in 3:52.45.

After the race, Baessa shared his feelings through statements released by the Portuguese Paralympic Committee (CPP). “I worked really hard this season,” he said. “I am very happy. This is my fourth podium at world championships, plus a medal from the [Paralympic] Games. Now it’s time to rest, then get back to work.” The 26-year-old athlete also gave some insight into his strategy. He always aimed “to stay with the front group.” He admitted, “I didn’t think the Japanese athlete would be so strong; he held on very well, and the American was always strong.”

In the same demanding 1,500-meter race, fellow Portuguese athlete Cristiano Pereira faced a tough day. His season has been troubled by physical issues. Pereira finished in 12th place, recording a time of 4:07.62.

Baessa’s bronze was a proud moment for Portugal. It marked the country’s third medal at these World Championships in India. Earlier in the competition, Miguel Monteiro earned a silver medal in the F40 shot put class, a category for athletes of short stature. Not long after, Mamudo Baldé added to the tally with a bronze in the 100 meters T54 wheelchair event. This series of wins truly showcases the depth of talent within Portugal’s paralympic team on the world stage.
