Samsung will finally democratize laptops with OLED screens

Samsung Display has announced the mass production of 90Hz OLED displays for laptops. This technology should therefore be democratized very soon on the market. An innovation for the moment still marginal and long awaited.

The Asus Vivobook with OLED screen

OLED screens on laptops have already been around for a few years, but are still very much in the minority and models that benefit from them are expensive. This will soon be history as Samsung Display announced mass production OLED displays with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. It was a promise from the builder.

Samsung Display will thus produce in large quantities 14 and 16 inch OLED screens for laptops. A small revolution in the market. The mention of a 90Hz refresh rate is interesting too. The target laptops, therefore laptops dedicated to office automation, are generally equipped with a 60 Hz LCD screen. A big development therefore.

For comparison, gaming PCs usually have an IPS LCD screen with a higher refresh rate, such as 144Hz, 240Hz, and sometimes more. They will be therefore less concerned by this news.

Samsung will only bring benefits with OLED

OLED brings certain advantages to users over LCD. This technology thus allows a much higher contrast, with really deep blacks and crisp whites. Depending on the calibration, colors may also be more vibrant than on a conventional IPS LCD screen. We can also note a greater luminosity as well as a zero remanence. In short, the consumer has everything to gain.

The mass arrival of OLED on PCs would be a great thing, both for user comfort and for the market. Some computers already benefit from this type of screen made by Samsung Display, such as the new Asus Vivobook and Zenbook.

For the moment, this production will only focus on work PCs, but we can hope for real democratization in the future, even on gaming machines. This does not mean either the programmed end of LCD technology, which still has a bright future ahead of it and which remains less expensive. It is likely to remain the ultra-dominant in the market for many years to come.
