Samsung hasn't talked about this screen improvement that the Galaxy S24 series brings

Samsung has made significant improvements to the displays with the Galaxy S24 series, with an increase in maximum brightness that now reaches 2,600 nits. In addition, the three models in the series – Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra – can reduce their frequency by up to 1 Hz thanks to an LTPO panel.

Despite all these new features, there is one additional feature that has gone unnoticed but is vital to the visual comfort of people with sensitive eyes.

Although Samsung has not highlighted this aspect, it has been noted The Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra displays have a 492 Hz PWM refresh rate. This value represents more than double the PWM refresh rate of the Galaxy S23 series displays, which was 240 Hz.

While it doesn't reach the extremes of 1920Hz or 2160Hz found on some Chinese-branded phones, it beats those of the iPhone 15 Pro (480Hz) and Pixel 8 (246Hz).


Why is PWM refresh rate important?

PWM refresh rate is a mechanism used in OLED displays to adjust their brightness. Although OLED screens can reduce their brightness more than LCD screens, there is a limit. This is where PWM is used.

However, this can result in a visual banding effect on the screen, which is usually visible at low brightness levels. On some phones, this effect can occur even at high brightness settings, which can cause vision problems for some people. To reduce these visual discomforts for people with sensitive eyes, a higher PWM refresh rate is required.

So if you have sensitive eyes and notice banding, the Galaxy S24 is an improvement over the Galaxy S23 series thanks to a higher PWM refresh rate. For those who don't have vision problems, this improvement may not have a significant impact.
