Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3: More ambitious folding gets stronger

Among the new smartphones is the long-awaited folding smartphone Galaxy Z Fold3, which comes with interesting improvements to keep the throne from the best folding of the moment.

design and build

The first of the improvements has to do with the smartphone’s durability. The Galaxy Z Fold3 finally delivers resistance IPX8 waterproof, which ensures that the phone can withstand up to 30 minutes under 1.5 meters of water.

Although Samsung doesn’t recommend dipping your phone, it’s comforting to know that nothing will happen to you if water gets on you or if you accidentally fall into a pool or bathtub.

The outer cover screen and the rear window are protected byr Gorilla Glass Victus, which is 50% stronger than the previous generation of Gorilla Glass 6. The camera module is protected by Gorilla Glass DX.

The inner screen now has a new protective sheet which is 80% stronger than the previous one, so it resists scratches better.

The strength improvements don’t stop there as, on the outside, the Galaxy Z Fold3’s metal frame and hinge are built with a new material called Aluminum Armor, which is 10% stronger than its predecessor and lighter, going from 282 to 271 grams.

One of the criticisms of the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Fold2 was that they were too thick when folded.

Samsung wanted to improve this aspect, and while it’s obviously still much thicker than a conventional smartphone, the two sides of the Galaxy Z Fold3 are now closer when closed, passing from a thickness of 16.8 to 16.0 mm. When opened, the thickness was also reduced from 6.9 to 6.4 mm.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 is available in a matte finish in Phantom Black (black), Phantom Silver (silver) and Phantom Green (green). This last hue is very dark and, in the real world (I had a chance to see it for myself), it looks gray.

Views and performance

6.2 ″ external screen It features a 2X dynamic AMOLED panel with HD+ resolution (2268 × 832 pixels, 387 dpi, 24.5:9 aspect ratio) and supports a 120 Hz refresh rate. It allows you to view notifications comfortably and use apps without having to open your smartphone.

7.6 ″ internal screen features a 2X Dynamic AMOLED panel with QXGA+ resolution (2208 × 1768 pixels, 374 dpi, 22.5:18 aspect ratio) and also offers a 120 Hz rate. The screen incorporates a new technology that makes it 29% brighter and really bright. looks good.

For the first time on a Samsung smartphone, the front camera is hidden under the screen. I had the opportunity to see it in person and, as can be seen in the photos, the camera is not completely invisible, as the pixel density just above the camera is visibly reduced.

This means that, on even backgrounds, a different looking circle is noticeable in the camera area. When playing or watching a video, it goes much more unnoticed as the background is changing.

The pixel area just above the screen looks different.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 incorporates the powerful 5 nanometer Snapdragon 888 5G chip (although there is a more powerful Snapdragon 888+ chip), 12 GB RAM, 256/512 GB UFS 3.1 storage, 4400 mAh battery with fast charging 25W and enhanced stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos sound.

S Pen and productivity

Another new feature of the Galaxy Z Fold3 is the Pen holder, with two pen options:

  • Edition S Pen Fold: It has a length of 132 mm, a diameter of 7.7 mm and a weight of 6.7 grams. It doesn’t have Bluetooth, so it doesn’t support gestures in the air and is exclusive to the Galaxy Z Fold.
  • S Pen Pro: It has a length of 173.6 mm, a diameter of 9.5 mm and a weight of 13.8 grams. It features Bluetooth and a switch that allows you to switch between conventional S Pen mode (compatible with Galaxy S21 Ultra, Note20 series, Note10 series, Galaxy Tab S7 / S7+, Galaxy Book Pro 360) and Z Fold mode. Will be released later

As the Galaxy Z Fold3 has no S Pen compartment, Samsung has created a case in which the S Pen Fold Edition can be inserted and stored.

Samsung made software improvements to improve productivity in features like Split View, and optimized the interface for a larger screen.

A UI now offers a fixed taskbar on one side that lets you switch between apps very comfortably, and the “Enable Multi-Window for All Apps” option in Settings allows you to use any app in one window.

cameras

In the photo section, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 has three camera groups:

  • Rear Cameras:
    • 12MP (1.8μm) wide-angle (83º) camera with f/1.8 aperture lens, optical stabilization and Dual Pixel AF focus
    • 12 MP (1.12 µm) (123°) ultra wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture lens
    • 2x 12MP (1.0 μm) telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture lens and optical stabilization
  • Frontal camera:
    • 10 MP (1.22 µm) wide angle camera (80°) with f/2.2 aperture
  • Indoor camera (under the screen)
    • 4 MP (2.0 μm) wide-angle (80º) camera with f/1.8 aperture lens

Although the indoor camera under the screen has a meager resolution of only 4MP, in reality most of the time you will use the front camera or even the rear cameras to take selfies, the use of the indoor camera being relegated to video conferencing.

Samsung has incorporated some features to make capturing photos easier:

  • double preview allows you to preview the capture, including filters or beauty effects, both on the inner screen and on the front, making it ideal for taking selfies.
  • capture view lets you see the photos you’re taking on one side of the internal screen and instantly delete or share them.
  • automatic framing Allows you to automatically frame photos of up to four people.
