Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 to Be 30% Thinner, Just 9.5mm Folded

Samsung plans to dramatically broaden the appeal of foldable smartphones in 2026, introducing notably thinner designs and an innovative tri-fold device.

South Korean reports indicate the company aims to sell 6.7 million units combined of its next-generation Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8. This represents a 10% increase over its 2024 foldable sales.

A primary focus will be the Galaxy Z Flip8, expected to feature a major hardware overhaul making it Samsung’s thinnest clamshell foldable to date.

When folded, the device will measure just 9.5 millimeters thick. This is approximately 30% slimmer than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip7, which measured 13.7 millimeters.

The enhanced portability aims to attract a wider consumer base. When unfolded, the new model’s thickness is expected to remain 6.9 millimeters, consistent with the Z Flip7.

Beyond its traditional foldable lineup, Samsung is also preparing to unveil its first tri-fold smartphone, tentatively named Galaxy Z TriFold, in 2026.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is anticipated to maintain a design and specifications similar to the Z Fold7. It may include a brighter AMOLED display and improved S Pen support for smoother functionality.

Leaked specifications for the Galaxy Z TriFold suggest it will house a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite or 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and a 10-inch AMOLED screen with 1,600 nits brightness.

It is also rumored to feature a 200-megapixel main camera and a 5,437 mAh battery. This battery capacity is slightly less than earlier unofficial reports.

The TriFold device is projected to be 3.9 millimeters thick when folded into three sections and 4.2 millimeters when fully unfolded.

Initial availability for the Galaxy Z TriFold will likely be limited, with approximately 20,000 to 30,000 units offered first in South Korea and select other Asian countries.

This aggressive product roadmap, reported by South Korean media outlet The Bell Korea, underscores Samsung’s strategy to position foldable devices as mainstream technology accessible to more users.
