Samsung has launched its Galaxy XR mixed-reality headset in the United States, positioning it as a significantly more affordable competitor to Apple’s Vision Pro while packing advanced features and Google’s integrated Gemini artificial intelligence.
The new headset is available for $1,799.99, a price point nearly half that of Apple’s premium device. This aggressive pricing strategy signals Samsung’s intent to capture a substantial share of the emerging extended reality market.
At its core, the Galaxy XR is powered by a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip and runs on the Android XR platform, a collaborative effort with Google and Qualcomm. It boasts a 4K micro-OLED display, offering a combined resolution of 29 million pixels across a 109-degree field of view with a refresh rate starting at 72 Hz.
A key differentiator is the deep integration of Google’s Gemini AI directly into the operating system. This AI is designed to act as a “new type of AI companion,” utilizing the headset’s cameras and microphones to understand the user’s surrounding environment.
The device features an array of more than 13 cameras and sensors. These include a high-resolution passthrough camera, six external world-tracking cameras, four eye-tracking cameras with iris recognition, and a 6.5 MP 3D camera for precise hand and eye tracking.
Samsung emphasized a “human-centric design” for the Galaxy XR, focusing on user comfort. The headset weighs 545 grams, making it considerably lighter than the Vision Pro, which typically ranges from 750 to 850 grams. It includes soft forehead cushioning and a detachable light shield to enhance immersion.
For entertainment, users can stream content on a 4K display, creating a private cinema experience, or watch multiple sports games simultaneously. Gemini AI also serves as a personal coach for XR games, providing real-time tips.
The AI capabilities extend to practical applications such as using Google Maps with personalized recommendations and voice-searching YouTube. A “Passthrough Mode” allows users to interact with the real world, enabling them to circle objects to find information.
The headset supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, comes with 16 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage. It operates on a separate battery that provides approximately two hours of video playback and can be used while charging.
Customers purchasing the Galaxy XR in the U.S. can opt for a 24-month installment plan. Early buyers also receive 12 months of free Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, and Google Play Pass. Optional accessories, including a travel case and controller, are sold separately for $250 each.
Samsung is reportedly exploring further collaborations, with potential partnerships with eyewear brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster for future product development.
