Sam Rainsy’s Cambodian Opposition Mourns Thai Queen Mother

A self-proclaimed “Independent Cambodian Government,” led by exiled opposition figure Sam Rainsy, has leveraged a message of condolence for Thailand’s Queen Mother to emphasize its own political aspirations and claims of popular representation.

The group expressed “deepest sorrow” over the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother of Thailand.

The statement, issued on October 26, 2025, was made “in the name of the Cambodian people, both inside and outside the country.” It did not specify Queen Sirikit’s date of death.

The message highlighted Queen Sirikit’s contributions to arts, culture, and rural development in Thailand, specifically mentioning the Support Foundation for Arts and Crafts. These efforts were credited with improving the quality of life for Thai citizens.

Sam Rainsy is a former Cambodian opposition leader who lives in exile.

The statement referred to Cambodia and Thailand as “neighbors with a long history of relations” and conveyed a sense of “great loss” for Thailand. It offered condolences to King Maha Vajiralongkorn, the Royal Family, and the Thai people.

The group, identified as the “Independent Cambodian Government 23 October,” asserted its role as a representative of “the aspirations for freedom and sovereignty of the Cambodian people.”

It pledged to align with nations valuing “sovereignty, cultural heritage, and the welfare of their people” to foster “free and equal international relations.” The statement concluded with wishes for strength and unity for the Thai people and remembrance of Queen Sirikit’s benevolence.
