Sam Raimi reflects on the Spider-Man 3 fiasco

At the start of the 21st century, superhero films vampirized cinemas less than they do today. Before the launch of the Marvel cinematic universe in 2008 with Iron man, you could count this kind of films on the finger of one hand. The standard bearers were the franchise X-Men under Bryan singer and Brett Ratner (2000-2003-2006) and the saga Spiderman of Sam raimi (2002-2004-2007). For Spider-Man, the third film was a total nightmare for Sam raimi, from filming to critical reception. Many will have depreciated the film, the fault of one Peter Parker caricature when tamed by the symbiote and antagonists presented in a hurry (especially Venom, very quickly shipped and overall lacking in its design). While the filmmaker had already left on a Spider-Man 4 where he would have introduced Mysterio (Bruce Campbell), Raimi backpedaled and left the field open to Marc Webb to reboot the franchise.

Since this failure, Sam raimi went to realize the Fantastic World of Oz (2013). But he has since been recalled by Kevin Feige and Marvel for a new feature film eagerly awaited by fans: Doctor Strange in the multiverse of Madness. The new opus of Supreme Sorcerer will implement the multiverse and seems to promise some pretty surprising cameos.

On the occasion of the promotion of the film “The Pages of Anguish”, the director confided in Collider, confident that he was still marked by the critical failure of the film:

“I didn’t know if I was able to face it again, because it was painful to be the director of Spider-Man 3. The internet got carried away and people didn’t like this movie. , and they let me know. So it was hard to take it, and then I saw an opening with Doctor Strange 2. My agent called me and said, ‘Marvel is looking for a director and your name is out. Would you be interested? I wondered if I was still able to do it. These kinds of films are demanding, and I finally thought that was reason enough to get involved. I’ve always liked Doctor Strange a lot. It was not my [ndlr : super-héros] preferred, but not far behind. I really like the first film. I think its director, Scott Derrickson, did a terrific job. I thought to myself that they had left the character in an interesting place. I really didn’t think I would have made another superhero movie. It just happened like that. “

There is no doubt that after so many years, the filmmaker is finally ready to deliver a new score for a superheroic feature film. Response in theaters for March 23, 2022.
