South Africa Dominates Day 1 of Cape Town Test

The second Test match between South Africa and Pakistan at Newlands, Cape Town, saw the host team take control on the first day. This impressive performance by both batsmen marked a historic moment at Newlands after 11 years.

Bavuma and Rickelton Create History

During the first day’s play, South Africa lost three wickets at the score of 72 by lunchtime. However, a record-breaking partnership of 235 runs for the fourth wicket between Ryan Rickelton and Temba Bavuma turned the game around. This achievement marked the first time since 2013 that two batsmen have scored century innings on the first day of a Test match at Newlands. Previously, Younis Khan and Asad Shafiq of Pakistan achieved this feat in 2013, with Younis Khan scoring 111 runs and Asad Shafiq scoring an unbeaten 111 runs.

Temba Bavuma Achieves Milestone

Temba Bavuma became the fifth South African captain to score over 500 runs in a home season. With 504 runs at an average of 72, Bavuma has had a remarkable home season. Faf du Plessis holds the top spot in this list, having scored 600 runs in the 2017-18 home season. The partnership of 235 runs between Rickelton and Bavuma is the fourth-highest partnership for South Africa against Pakistan in a Test match.
