Ryan Gosling to play Ken in a Barbie movie

Ryan Gosling will play Ken in a film about Barbie, announced the trade magazine Deadline.

Eva Mendes’ husband has just agreed to lend his features to the doll alongside Margot Robbie, head of the film she is co-producing with her husband, Tom Ackerley.

The feature film, inspired by the universe of the mythical Marvel doll, has therefore officially found its main roles. Margot Robbie did not hide her pride when she said: “Barbie promotes self-confidence, curiosity and interaction. It has allowed children to imagine themselves in inspiring roles, be it that of a princess or a president. I am honored to embody this role and produce this film which will positively influence children and audiences around the world ”.

Go against the clichés

The actress is all the more enthusiastic as the scenario of the film should free itself from the clichés long conveyed by the mannequin doll by taking a feminist dimension.

“It’s true that it’s a film that comes with a very heavy heritage, she had conceded in an interview for Vogue. There are a lot of connections, both controversial and nostalgic. Despite this, there are a lot of interesting ways to approach it. Usually when people hear Barbie they spontaneously say to themselves, ‘I already know what this movie is going to be like.’ But when they hear that it’s Greta Gerwig who writes it and realizes it, they think: ‘Oh, well, maybe I was wrong’ ”.

The live action Barbie will indeed be directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), on a screenplay co-written with Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story). Filming is expected to start in early 2022 for a 2023 release.
